The New Eden Research Group, or NERG, was a department of the CAN involved with terraforming activities and biological research. NERG facilities seem to be responsible for bringing mutant animals such as apeboys, dogboys and reptilians to Mars, and it was the work of Doctor Matthew Walters in adapting species for survival on the red planet that led to mutant insects escaping the NERG facility in Copernicus station.
